Steve Dodge received M.A. and PhD degrees with a major in history from the University of Minnesota and he taught history at Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois from 1968 until 2000. His first book, Abaco: The History of an Out Island and its Cays, was published in 1983 and is still available in a third edition. He has written a variety of other books about Abaco and The Bahamas, including The Bahamas Index and Yearbook series, which indexed the Bahamian newspapers and published interviews with Bahamian leaders, including 3 of the 4 men who have served as Prime Minister of The Bahamas since independence in 1973. He initiated The Cruising Guide to Abaco, Bahamas in 1989 and has updated it each year since then. His wife Marjorie and his sons Jeff and Jon are active partners in this continuing project.

Steve and his wife Marjorie reside at White Sound on Elbow Cay for about 5 months of the year. Though they were both raised in large cities (New York and Chicago), they are delighted to be part of the wonderful Hope Town community. They are long term members of the Hope Town Sailing Club and are pleased to support several local philanthropic organizations such as Every Child Counts, the Elbow Reef Lighthouse Society and Friends of the the Environment.

In 2009 Steve was the very proud recipient of the Cacique Award for Creative Arts from the Ministry of Tourism, Government of The Bahamas.The purpose of the Cacique Awards is to recognize the role played by individuals and organizations whose performance or products have consistently made a positive impact on the quality and growth of Bahamas tourism.
